The Science of the Vagina: How to Keep It Clean

It’s time we talk about the vagina. Most women cringe at the very mention of their magical lady parts, let alone at the thought of discussing it in casual conversation. But the fact of the matter is, most women have the same questions and concerns as you probably do. So, let’s get the low down on how to care for your kitty-cat, va-jay-jay, honey pot, muff, snatch, punani, or whatever else you’ve nicknamed your nether regions.

First, it’s important to know that the vagina is designed to keep itself clean… for the most part. But there are small things that you can do daily to help support your vaginal health. Some examples include wiping from front to back, switching your style of underwear, peeing after intercourse, and using products that are safe and gentle. You can also promote good vaginal health by cleaning your private parts regularly.

Is It Safe to Wash the Vagina?

The short answer to this question is absolutely! There are methods to safely cleansing your coochie, so you’re left smelling and feeling fresh. Here’s what we’ll be breaking down in this Moody Method:

·         How the vagina works.

·         How to safely clean the vagina.

·         When to wash your vagina.

·         What products to use on your vagina.

The Vagina Is Like a Self-Cleaning Oven

The vagina is a well-oiled (literally) machine, that pretty much self-regulates without needing much outside assistance. You’ve likely noticed that your vaginal discharge varies throughout your cycle from clear to white, sometimes producing a slight odor, but never much out of the ordinary. One way that your vagina regularly cleanses itself is by producing its own discharge. Along with other powerful bacteria that resides in the vagina, these forces work together as a team to maintain the perfect pH balance within your private parts.

These good vaginal bacteria work to your advantage and fight to keep bad bacteria away. This is why it’s important to let the vagina do it’s own thing, and to work with it — not against it. Washing too far up inside of the vagina, or douching can strip your vagina of its natural pH, which can result in infections that come with a whole host of unwanted symptoms.

How to Carefully Cleanse the Vagina

When tidying up downstairs, you want to be sure you’re strictly using unscented, pH balanced products only. This will prevent the possibility of any irritation from fragrances. You want to be sure to separate your skin, and clean between all of your cracks and crevices. When it’s time to dry, gently pat your skin with a towel rather than rubbing. Remember that the skin around your vagina is highly sensitive, and sometimes even the slightest thing can cause discomfort.

When to Wash the Vagina

It is perfectly safe, and in fact recommended, to gently wash the outer area of your vagina daily. This helps prevent bad bacteria from seeping in and causing bacterial or yeast infections. It’s especially important to keep your perineal area (between your vagina and anus) clean as bacteria from waste and wiping can easily enter the vagina from this access point.

If you prefer to wear pads during your period, you may not realize how sitting in your own bacteria for too long can cause issues.  We recommended washing after each time you change your pad or tampon to keep things balanced, clean and free of foul odors.

Bacteria and viruses can travel into the vagina during sex as well. If you don’t wish to wear protection with your partner, be sure you do what you can to support your vaginal health by cleaning after intercourse.

Other Common Times to Clean the Vagina:

·         During your monthly cycle.

·         After defecating.

·         After sweating/an intense workout.

·         Before or after sexual intercourse.

·         Any time that you feel unclean down there.

During your cycle, you may feel inclined to wash more frequently. Showering twice a day with some warm water, and a small amount of mild cleanser is perfectly fine for freshening up when needed.

More Methods to Keeping Your Vagina Clean

Beyond just your grooming habits, there are plenty of things you can do to keep your private parts in pristine condition. The following are a handful of examples:
