What should I look for in natural skincare?
Even though it can sometimes feel like the world of natural skincare has a steep learning curve, it all comes down to a few simple principles.
1. Non-toxic
The label “non-toxic” might seem like a meaningless, trendy label, but it’s not. It reflects a growing desire in the skincare community to eliminate harmful and disruptive chemicals from products that we use every day on our bodies.
Not all synthetic ingredients are harmful, but research shows that many elements that have traditionally been old-standbys in the skincare community have disruptive effects on our bodies.
Ingredients like parabens (used as a preservative), phthalates (used as a fragrance), and triclosan (used in soap products) have all consistently been used in the skincare industry for decades. Still, they have a disruptive effect on the hormones of those who use them.
Skincare customers assume that the FDA tightly regulates which skincare products are allowed on our shelves, but that’s unfortunately not the case. Because of lax FDA regulations, many companies continue to use harmful ingredients just because they can.

2. Cruelty-free
You’ve probably seen more and more of your favorite products pop up with a little “cruelty-free” certification on their packaging in recent years. The label is used on more products now than ever.
Unfortunately, the FDA does not legally define the term “cruelty-free,” so it’s often freely used on products by companies that might still rely on animal testing.
A genuinely cruelty-free product uses ingredients that have never been tested on animals by a company that has never hired others to conduct tests on animals on their behalf. When Moody Sisters say “cruelty-free,” we mean it!
3. Made in the USA
A product made in the USA is beneficial for the consumer for so many reasons!
Firstly, a product made here is better for the environment than products produced and sold outside of the US. Here we can rely on production methods that are more eco-friendly than other countries.
A product made here also adheres to the USA’s high standard of labor. When we buy foreign products, we cannot be sure that the workers who made that product were treated fairly. When we purchase products like that, we indirectly support the violation of workers’ rights abroad.
Likewise, when we purchase products made in the US, we are guaranteed that someone created the work under safe and fair working conditions due to governmental acts like OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration).
You’re also guaranteed a certain level of quality when you buy American products. Even though the cost of a “Made in the USA” product might be higher upfront, you ultimately end up spending less money in the long run because the products adhere to a higher standard of quality.
4. Small and fresh product batches
All Moody Sisters products are created using small-batch production. What are the benefits of avoiding mass-produced products? Our business is more sustainable than the alternative. Small-batch production doesn’t create pollution, and waste like a mass-production business does. Our carbon footprint is minimal because our company is so scaled-down.
We promise customers a level of quality in small-batch products that might not be there in mass production. This quality level is certain because quality control is much easier to oversee when fewer products are churned out at once.
