Making the Switch to Natural Shampoo + Scalp Recovery
Shampoo Detox + Scalp Recovery
Here’s the deal. My scalp was mistreated for years with the chemicals and fragrance I slathered on it from commercial shampoos. My scalp and hair was moody and unbalanced, always flaking, always itching so I needed to give it a 1-2 punch to knock it back into hydrated and happy.
Your hair and scalp-- just like your skin, has a natural balance. If you disturb that force it can become out of control moody. And that little SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) is one of the biggest reasons why you might be having issues. It strips any natural oils you may have on your scalp and hair causing your hair to be dry and your scalp to go into over production of sebum (oil) causing not only greasy hair, but this over production of oil is food for a natural fungus that is found in your hair that creates dandruff! It’s a sick cycle and it needs to stop!
*I love this story and article from Floris about his journey to natural shampoo- he has some great sciencey info on fungus if you like that kind of stuff*
Tip: Give it time! Getting your scalp back to it’s natural balance can take time. It won’t be an overnight fix, but it can be a happy and effective process!
Apple Cider & Lemon Rinse
A good start is to help your scalp return to it’s natural balance. This is done easily with some of our favorite friends Apple Cider Vinegar & Lemon Juice.
Take ½ cup apple cider vinegar + 2 tablespoons lemon juice and mix into 2 cups water. Use this mixture to pour all over your head and make sure to massge into your scalp. Let sit for 5-10 minutes or until it gets tingly. Rinse with cold water.
Tip: Do not scratch your scalp with your nails. This will irritate your scalp even more.
My poor scalp was so overwhelmed and upset with me for everything I had put it through over the years. It was red, angry, irritated and itched like crazy. But it was OH so magical to slather aloe and massage it into my scalp until every square centimeter of my scalp was covered.
I probably used ¼ - 1/3 cup aloe gel to get my whole head. Put your hair up or braid it out of the way and just let the aloe work it’s anti-fungal soothing magic. Let the aloe soak in overnight. Rinse & wash with natural shampoo the next morning.
To encourage natural balance shampoo with a natural wash that is SLS, fragrance and chemical free. Hop in the shower with your 3-1 Wash, Shave & Shampoo and get ready to have your world rocked. Lather the wash in your hands and massage gently into your scalp. The bubbles will not form in your hair like commercial shampoo.
Tip: Wash with warm water. Massage the shampoo into your scalp and don’t use your nails as it will irritate your skin further. Let the shampoo sit 2-5 minutes and cleanse your hair naturally. Rinse with cold water for the ultimate soft silky effect.
After just 1 day of doing this detox and soothing scalp rinse & mask I could not believe how clean and nice my scalp felt. I don't think I itched my head all morning! I can tell my hair is already stronger, softer and on it's way to complete balanced bliss. I'll update more when I pass the month mark! I can't wait to hear your results!
