DIY Bug Repellant

Moody Sisters Bug Off Recipe

We no longer offer our Bug Off Spray on our website - but we didn't want to leave you hanging now that mosquito season is upon us!

Here's our basic recipe to make 4 oz of Bug Spray:

  • 1/4 cup Distilled Water
  • 2 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Witch Hazel
  • 1 tsp glycerin
  • 1/2 tsp Vitamin E
  • 1 tsp Essential Oils

We realize you might not have all of this laying around the house.  In this recipe, the Apple Cider Vinegar is truly helpful with bugs, so I would definitely make sure to add that in.  The Witch Hazel, Glycerin, and Vitamin E helps the recipe absorb on skin without being too harsh, but in a pinch, they could be omitted and replaced with more water or rubbing alcohol.

The Moody Sisters Bug Off Essential Oil blend includes:

  • 60 drops Citronella
  • 60 drops Peppermint
  • 50 drops Eucalyptus
  • 50 drops Lavender
  • 25 drops Lemongrass
  • 25 drops Rosemary
  • 12 drops Clove Bud
  • 12 drops Lemon

Make sure to mix Essential oils in a glass or stainless steel bowl, as they are too harsh for most plastics.  If you don't have all of those EOs around, we feel like the most important bug-fighting oils are Citronella, Lavender and Peppermint.  (Whatever you do, I wouldn't recommend more than that amount of Clove Bud, it can be irritating on the skin.)

Combine ingredients in your bottle (Did you reuse one of our old bottles?!  Send us a pic on instagram!).  Be sure to shake vigorously before each use!  Reapply as necessary.

Happy Camping!
