Moody Sister Jess’ Top 9 Bacteria-Busting EOs:

WARNING:  This paragraph may contain research facts you find boring.  Feel free to skip ahead!
In a test done by the National Institutes of Health several essential oils were tested against 22 strains of bacteria.  Lemongrass, Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Orange essential oils were effective against all 22 of the tested bacterial strains.  Patchouli was effective against 20 types of the bacteria, and Citronella and Geranium essential oils were effective against over 10 types of bacteria each. (1)  Other studies have shown the anti-bacterial power of Rosemary, Lavender and Tea Tree essential oils.  (2, 3 & 4)

Ok, enough with the research, I don’t want to bore you to death.  These anti-bacterial essential oils make great natural cleaners around your house.  Find some great recipes for “Green Cleaning” with Essential Oils on our Pinterest boards  – or make my favorite household cleaner with only 3 ingredients.

Many strains of bacteria are beneficial to us – in fact we wouldn’t survive without them.  However, some of the bacteria found on our bodies are  less than desirable.  Did you know that bacteria is the cause of Body Odor?  (YUCK)  The glands in our pits carry secretions of fats and proteins from your body (DOUBLE YUCK), which the bacteria feed on and break down, creating that lovely odor.  (Do you ever regret googling things like I do?  Sometimes my curiosity is a curse.)  Deodorants work by creating a hostile environment for those gross bacteria.  If they can't survive, they can't spew out those nasty smells.  That is why we love using many of these anti-bacterial essential oils in our Deodorant blends and Cleansing Spray!  No bacteria, no smell, no problem.  My personal favorite is our new Lavender Citrus blend, which combines all of the bacteria-busting power of Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass and Sweet Orange essential oils.  Smells delish and keeps bacteria at bay?  Sign me up!  We will also be releasing a Tea Tree & Peppermint deodorant.  It will be our ultimate bacteria-fighting recipe with Peppermint, Tea Tree, Lemon, Rosemary and a hint of Patchouli essential oils.  It will be a great treat for men's and women's pits alike!

I’d like to finish up with a friendly PSA (Do they still have those on TV?!  I guess I don’t watch enough after school cartoons nowadays!)

I HIGHLY encourage you to do your own research on Essential Oils.  There are a TON of blogs, posts, tweets, and salesmen out there spouting off all sorts of facts and uses for Essential Oils.  The most important FACT about Essential Oils you need to know is this:  They are extremely potent.  Did you know it takes 100 pounds of Lavender to make 1 pound of Essential Oil?  Some Essential oils are so potent you should never put them directly on your skin without diluting them and certain essential oils are not suitable for pregnant women or children.  My most important safety tip – don’t use any essential oils internally unless under the supervision of a Doctor or Certified Aromatherapist.

Happy Bacteria Busting!
